About

Why Hire A College Consultant?

As the college admission process gets increasingly competitive and complex, more families are looking for personal guidance. In a survey from 2005, 26% of high-achieving high school students said they used an Independent College Consultant, and the field has only grown since then.

High school counselors are great, but with hundreds of students to advise, they don't have the time to focus on only college. They don't have the resources to visit dozens of colleges each year, all across the country. We do.

We visit 2-3 campuses a month to learn what unique majors, resources, and learning environments they offer. If we work with a 3.3 GPA student with a limited budget who wants to major in computer science, play in an orchestra without being a music major, play club soccer, and join a fraternity at a college on the West Coast, we'd have him look at Oregon State University, University of Nevada Reno, Cal State East Bay, Chico State, and the University of Arizona for just a start.

"College Knowledge" requires a commitment to continuously learning through resources like:

  • Attending the UC Counselor Conference and the Cal State Counselor Conference annually to hear admission data and learn about new programs.

  • Attending the annual conference of the Independent Educational Consultants Association to network with other consultants, attend seminars about college admissions and meet with admission reps at the college fair.

  • Joining counselor-only college tour trips throughout the United States.

  • Networking with other consultants across the country to share information about colleges in every state and internationally.

  • Coursework to earn the Independent College Consulting Certificate at the University of California, Irvine.

  • Listening and learning from all kinds of people about their college experiences. One time in a hotel lobby, Candice chatted with a friendly gentleman and learned about the hidden gem University of Montevallo, Alabama's public liberal arts school, with a great theater program and high acceptance rates to medical and dental school!
